Stepping into the world of cosmetic treatments can feel a little daunting, especially when it’s your very first time. You’ve probably got an idea of what Botox can do for you, be it from friends, social media or magazines, but you might still have questions about the process.

At Telma Skin Clinic, we aim to be transparent, tailoring every appointment to exactly what is suitable for you and your goals. Your comfort and confidence are our top priorities.

That’s why we’ve created this guide to walk you through exactly what to expect when you come to us for Botox treatment, from the moment you book your appointment to the final result.

What is Botox and How Does It Work?

Before we dive into what the process looks like, we want to quickly explain what Botox is and how it works.

Botox is a purified protein that is injected into specific facial muscles. Its job is to temporarily block nerve signals to those muscles, which prevents them from contracting. When the muscles can’t contract, the skin over them relaxes and the wrinkles or lines caused by repeated facial expressions, like frown lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet, begin to smooth out.

Because your body naturally metabolises the protein over time, the effects are temporary, typically lasting for three to four months. This means the results are fully reversible and your facial muscles will gradually return to their pre-treatment state, offering you peace of mind and control.

Before You Arrive

Preparation is key to a smooth, successful experience. We want to ensure your treatment goes as planned, so it’s best to follow a few simple guidelines in the days leading up to your appointment.

  • Avoid Blood Thinners: We recommend you stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements at least one week before your treatment. This includes common over-the-counter options like Nurofen (ibuprofen) and some herbal supplements like St John’s Wort, as they can increase the risk of bruising. Of course, it’s best to always consult with your doctor before stopping any prescribed medication.
  • Steer Clear of Alcohol: It’s best to avoid alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before your appointment because they can thin your blood and make you more susceptible to bruising.
  • Arrive Fresh-Faced: On the day of your treatment, make sure your skin is clean and free of makeup. We will cleanse the area again, but starting with a clean slate helps us get the best results.

During Your Treatment

The actual treatment process is surprisingly quick and simple. Most first-timers are amazed at how fast it is.

  • The Consultation: Your appointment will begin with a one-on-one consultation with our trained doctor, who will listen to your concerns, assess your facial muscles and skin and discuss your desired results. This is your opportunity to ask any questions you have and ensure you feel completely comfortable with the proposed treatment plan.
  • The Injections: Once you are ready, the doctor will use a very fine needle to inject tiny amounts of Botox into the targeted muscles. Most people describe the sensation as a very small pinch or a slight pinprick. The whole process typically takes less than 15 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

Once your Botox treatment is complete, you can get straight back to your day. However, following a few simple aftercare instructions is crucial to minimise any side effects.

  • Be Gentle with the Area: For at least 24 hours, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas. This can cause the Botox to migrate to unintended muscles, which you definitely want to avoid.
  • Stay Upright: Avoid lying down or bending over for a few hours after your treatment. Staying upright helps the Botox settle into the intended muscles.
  • Skip the Gym: We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise or anything that raises your body temperature for at least 24 hours. This is because increased blood flow to the face can actually dilute the Botox and reduce its effectiveness.
  • Bruising and Swelling: It’s normal to see some minor redness, swelling, or even a small bruise at the injection sites. These side effects are temporary and usually fade within a few days.

Your Results

You won’t see the final result immediately. The full effect of Botox typically becomes visible within 7 to 14 days after your treatment. During this time, you’ll gradually notice your lines and wrinkles softening and smoothing out.

The results usually last for about three to four months. Once you notice the effects beginning to wear off, you can book a follow-up appointment to maintain your refreshed look.
